Carl E. James is Professor of Education at York University, where he is cross-appointed with graduate programs in Sociology and the School of Social Work, and also serves as the Director of the York Centre for Education and Community. He is the author of Race in Play: Understanding the Socio-Cultural Worlds of Student Athletes (CSPI, 2005), co-editor of the popular collection Race and Racialization: Essential Readings (CSPI, 2007), and the author of numerous books and scholarly articles, as well as a regular contributor to national news media. A former youth worker widely recognized for his work in Toronto’s marginalized communities, James is continuously engaged in professional development work with community agencies and social service workers. His research interests are wide-ranging and include issues of equity and inclusivity in education, community development, immigration policies and immigrant settlement, and critical ethnography. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has won numerous awards for his teaching, research, and community work including the New Pioneer Award (Skills for Change, 2006), the William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations (City of Toronto, 2008), the African Canadian Achievement Award (2009) and the Harry Jerome Award for Professional Excellence (Black Business and Professional Association, 2013). In 2006, James was granted an Honorary Doctorate from Uppsala University in Sweden and has been included in both Canadian Who’s Who and Who’s Who in Black Canada.
